On the occasion of the International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHO) and as part of the Protest the Pope Campaign, we are delighted to announce that the makers of the film, Gustav Hofer and Luca Ragazzi will be present at this event and will talk about their experience of making this film.
"Suddenly Last Winter is the story of Gustav and Luca. Their life changes when the Italian government presents a draft law that would give rights to unmarried and gay couples, prompting a wave of homophobia in Italy. The Vatican and conservatives fight against it, preaching that the end of morality and the family are nigh if the legalisation on civil unions is not blocked. Together for over eight years, Luca and Gustav want to understand the different positions and undertake a journey into a country they did not know before and did not expect to find: their own."
With the Pope set to visit the UK on an official state visit in 2010, this moving and heartwarming documentary is a timely reminder of the negative effects that religious influence in politics can have on people's lives, and the homophobia and bigotry it helps spread.
“ Introductions and context setting was good and the award presentation very good. Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence fun (if making me feel very old). Film was okay (not angry enough) but Q&A was a bit dull - Italian Woman was the only question that I thought had an interesting point to make - we ducked out shortly after. ”
“ A wonderful evening - Gustav and Luca were so lovely and friendly, Leo's speech was impassioned and empowering, the Sister's of Perpetual Indulgence hilarious. Just a fantastic evening. ”
“ I loved as we know that < religious organisations seem determined to block the progress of LGTB right in many parts of the world >, the film give me ideas to do practices actions and let me feel human...thank to the organizer... ”
