SPECIAL INTERNATIONAL MEETING-HOMOPHOBIA IN AFRICA.

Conway Hall (map)

Selected By: Derek Lennard

In the midst of increasing alarm about draconian measures to "deal" with homosexuality in Africa-often stoked up by American evangelical Christians-this landmark meeting will hear the views of two brave African campaigners. Leo Igwe, who is coming to London especially to take part in activities to mark the International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHO) has suffered constant harassment, physical attacks, and several periods of imprisonment in Nigeria for his staunch defence of LGBT Rights. He is the founder and executive secretary of the Nigerian Humanist Movement. Leo will be receiving the Nordic Rainbow Humanist Award at our other IDAHO event on 16th May.

Reverend Rowland Jide Macaulay is the founding Pastor of the House of Rainbow Metropolitan Community Church, Lagos, Nigeria. He has won several awards including 2007 Black LGBT Award as "Man of the Year" for his work in helping LGBT people of faith.

Please join these two special guests as we tease out some of the issues around homophobia in Africa and what we can do to fight it from differing perspectives.
This will also be an opportunity to get the latest news on what is going on to mark IDAHO in over 50 countries around the world.

For more information about Leo and his work, and to find out how you can help GALHA cover Leo's flight and visa costs for his visit for this very special event, please visit http://www.galha.org/....

Empowering and impassioned speeches from both speakers, and both lovely to talk to afterward. This event served as a timely reminder that although gays and lesbians are treated relatively equal in this country, there's still a long way to go in many others.

Yet again a wonderful meetup. And a wake-up to the progress and obstacles for the LGBT community in Africa. We were heartened by the brave work going on and challenged to do something constuctive in supporting their efforts. It is a challenge that cannot be left unheeded...
