Play - The Battle for Dover Soul

Conway Hall (map)

Selected By: Derek Lennard

This play has been specially written by "Fire and Brimstone Productions", which consists of GALHA members and their friends. In 2005 eleven concerned parents took the rural school board in Dover, Pennsylvania to court for teaching "intelligent design" in ninth grade biology classrooms. The reverberations of the controversial-often explosive court case were felt around the world.
"The Battle for Dover Soul" shows some of the legal battles which took place, and explores the relationship between a young mother who took the Board to court, and an evangelical Christian member of the Board who argued for the teaching of creationism.

At a time when the coalition government is relaxing rules about what faith schools teach in their classrooms-the message of this play could hardly be more relevant. There will be a suggested admission charge of £5 -all the proceeds will go to the Uganda Humanist Schools Trust.

Below-is an extract from Bruce Springsteen's song "Part Man, Part Monkey". (which he performed on several occasions with reference to the Dover court case).

They prosecuted some poor sucker in these United States
For teaching that man descended from the apes
They coulda settled that case without a fuss or fight
If they'd seen me chasin' you, sugar, through the jungle last night
They'da called in that jury and a one two three said
Part man, part monkey, definitely

Well the church bell rings from the corner steeple
Man in a monkey suit swears he'll do no evil
Offers his lover's prayer but his soul lies
Dark and driftin' and unsatisfied
Well hey bartender, tell me whaddaya see
Part man, part monkey, looks like to me

Well the night is dark, the moon is full
The flowers of romance exert their pull
We talk awhile, my fingers slip
I'm hard and crackling like a whip

Well did God make man in a breath of holy fire
Or did he crawl on up out of the muck and mire
Well the man on the street believes what the bible tells him so
Well you can ask me, mister, because I know
Tell them soul-suckin' preachers to come on down and see.
