Protest the Pope - March and Rally

Hyde Park Corner (map)

Selected By: Tyrone

On Saturday September 18th at 1:30pm, GALHA will be joining the other members of the Protest the Pope coalition in a march and rally to protest against the Pope's State Visit to the UK.

We will be assembling around 1:30pm at Hyde Park Corner, at the top of Piccadilly. From there we will proceed through central London via Piccadilly, Piccadilly Circus, Haymarket, Trafalgar Square and Whitehall.

Our ultimate destination will be Richmond Terrace, opposite Downing Stree, where there will be a final rally with speeches.

At the arrival point, opposite Downing Street, on Richmond Terrace, there will be the final Rally with speeches.

Further information on the march can be found at the Protest the Pope website.

It would be great to see as many GALHA supporters there as possible. We will be marching with the GALHA banner, so please join us.

Just want to say - there will be a GALHA banner too, I think , hopefully very near the Protest the Pope banner shown in the pic here. Hoping we GALHA members and supporters will be able to meet up under our own banner so we can be in evidence!

What an amazing event to be part of, I felt incredibly charged and great to see the effort so many people had gone to with their banners and costumes. Sorry I didn't get to meet any of you guys, but it was very busy and me and my partner had our bicycles so it wasn't easy to move from our original position. Waiting and hour and a half for it to start was a bit frustrating but got talking to some lovely people and it was well worth the wait. Hope everybody else had a good time, Steve

Finally managed to find the banner with Sue and friend gallantly holding it high through Trafalgar Sq. Bigger banner next time, I think! But it was a wonderful event, and the speakers were brilliant, particularly Andrew Copson, Maryam and of course Richard Dawkins. There was something so heartwarming about the sight of so much humanity, in such numbers, variety and determination for a defence of reason over superstition. Greetings to everyone who shared in this event.

Yep, Martin; we need to make a bigger better banner! Also I think we could give a mobile number out so that folk can find us. But I agree it was great, wasn't it? Talking about our banner.. see the Guardian report that mentions it, and the photos from the link.

There were at least 60 GALHA members there yesterday-sorry we couldn't all meet-up, but there were just too many people on the demo-around 16,000-we reckon! What a great day and a great demo. And yes it may have been an anti-demo, but actually it was very very positive.

The sense of outrage, expressed with reason and never hysterical or bad-mannered, was clear to all and was ultimately something to be proud of.

Wow, there must have been more than 10,000 people and such a mixed group. I have been on many Marches and this was special. From vicims of abuse at the hands of the priests, tax payers not happy with the cost of the visit of a religious leader, anarchists rejecting the Catholic tyranny, survivors of religions indocrination by their parents, et a and the rationalists. it felt like my kind of heaven. ;-) thanks for being there!
