SPECIAL LGBT HISTORY MONTH EDITION OF "THE VINYL CLOSET".
Please see www.vinylcloset.org
To celebrate LGBT History Month, entertainers and LGBT veteran campaigners, Ted Brown and Brett Lock will present "The Vinyl Closet" an evening of music and chat. In the first half Ted and Brett will shine a light into the dark musical closet of the pre-gay liberation era, investigating how queer gender and sexuality was represented on records. From the clubs of Harlem to the end of the Yellow Brick road, taking in musicals, the blues and early rock n roll.
Ted Brown will sing-backed by his musical collaborator-Brett Lock-a selection of songs while the pair open up the discussion of this fascinating period of LGBT history.
In the second part, they dip into the deep vinyl closet once again and look at the post-Stonewall era.
The 1969 Stonewall Riots were a watershed in the LGBT liberation and a convenient chapter marking for our project. We sift through the sounds of the 1970s and 80s to uncover portrayals of LGBT lives in popular music. This period lies between the awakening of the gay movement following Stonewall and the start of the modern radical gay activism at the beginning of the 1990s. The period includes the colourful "transgression" of the glam rock era and the changing perspectives on sexuality, the shock of AIDS and a more political thrust which is also represented in the music.
This event is a fundraiser for the Gay and Lesbian Humanist Association who will also host the evening. The admission fee of £5 will go towards our work of supporting the International Day and Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHO), and will also be used to develop the Vinyl Closet which thus far has been entirely unfunded.
UPDATE: Fans of Darren Hayes and Savage Garden won't want to miss this event, as we'll also be auctioning off this exclusive bundle of goodies generously donated by the singer. As well as a DVD and special promotional album, there's a t-shirt signed by the man himself!

Refunds are not offered for this Meetup.
Thanks to everyone who attended "The Vinyl Closet". This was a very special evening!
